Next Up | Porochista Khakpour

The New Writing Series welcomes fiction writer Porochista Khakpour to the University of Maine campus for a reading on Thursday, March 30, 2017 at 4:30pm in the Allen and Sally Fernald APPE space (104 Stewart Commons). The reading, which is free & open to the public, will be introduced by Greg Howard and followed by an audience Q&A with the author.

Porochista Khakpour was born in Tehran and raised in the greater Los Angeles area. She is the author of the memoir Sick (HarperPerennial, forthcoming), as well as the novels The Last Illusion (Bloomsbury, 2014)—named a “best book of the year” by NPR, Kirkus, and BuzzFeed—and Sons and Other Flammable Objects (Grove, 2007), a California Book Award winner and New York Times Editors’ Choice. Her writing has appeared in Harper’s, Bookforum,the New York Times,the Los Angeles Times,Slate,Salon, Spin, Elle,and many others. She is a writer in residence at Bard College.

Rob Halpern is the author of several books of poetry, including Common Place (Ugly Duckling, 2015), [——] Placeholder (Enitharmon), Music for Porn (Nightboat, 2013), Disaster Suites (Palm Press, 2009), and Rumored Place (Krupskaya, 2006). Together with Taylor Brady, he also co-authored the book-length poem Snow Sensitive Skin, which has been reissued by Displaced Press. Recent essays and translations appear in Chicago Review, Journal of Narrative Theory, and The Claudius App. Rob currently splits his time between San Francisco and Ypsilanti, where he is an associate professor of creative writing at Eastern Michigan University.
