Elizabeth Willis on Lorine Niedecker

Poet Elizabeth Willis (NWS S’05) answers the question “Who Was Lorine Niedecker?” at the Academy of American Poets website. “There’s a tendency when writing about an underacknowledged writer to try to set her up as a kind of hero, but Niedecker is inspiring less in her heroism than in her perseverance—the perseverance of a poet who would not be separated from her cultural and aesthetic sources.” Niedecker’s Collected Works are available through the University of California Press. The National Poetry Foundation published Lorine Niedecker: Woman and Poet in 1996. For a longer, scholarly meditation on Niedecker’s work by Willis, read “Possessing Possession: Lorine Niedecker, Folk, and the Allegory of Making.”
